Job descriptions
Mac Operators
A Mac Operator will often do much of the less creative work in a design studio, or publishing house. This can include marked-up text corrections, spell checks and formatting documents to pre-arranged templates. A Mac Operator's role includes typesetting of long and heavy text documents. Mac Operators must have a 'design eye' but design skills are not necessary. Good skills in all graphics software are needed especially in the publishing programs of InDesign and QuarkXpress.
Junior - $35,000 - $45,000
Mid - $50,000 - $55,000
Senior - $60,000 - $70,000
Finished Artists, Artworkers, Graphic Artists
These three terms have the same definition but change depending what part of the world you are from. These roles generally have a high level of skill in the basic graphic design software products, such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, QuarkXpress and so on. Finished Artists are not expected to have much creative input, but implement a concept, based on a designer's or Art Director's brief. This artwork is then prepared ready for prepress or print. High-end Photoshop skills, in particular, are a much sought after skill.
Junior - $35,000 - $45,000

Creative Services Manager
They are in charge of total agency workflow, systems (hard and soft), hiring Creative Services staff (studio, production, traffic) and overseeing supplier relationships. Creative Services Managers have probably done a bit of everything - Production, Traffic, Studio - successfully for a while and are Clinton-esque in their ability to park huge amounts of information and stress while looking like they're doing some gardening. If Traffic are the glue of the agency, the Creative Services Manager is the hardener or the horse!

Print Producer or Production Manager
Print producers are responsible for print and reprographic buying. Or, managing anything that no-one else wants to do. You estimate and buy stuff, play with big machines, check proofs endlessly, manage distribution, collect bric-a-brac and weird things. Production Co-ordinators assist the managers by giving them someone to shout out and do most of the incredibly mundane - it is after all an entry level position. Production Directors negotiate and manage supplier relationships and budgets for the whole department. This is either a senior management role, or reports directly in to one.
